Exquisite and rare, this late 20th-century carved bust captures the timeless elegance of the female form, masterfully rendered in indigenous Hawaiian Milo wood. Hand-carved and signed on the base by artist Brandon Blair, this piece highlights the natural beauty and deep historical legacy of traditional Hawaiian craftsmanship.
The artist: His Scottish and Hawaiian decent, coupled with being born and raised on Maui, allow Blair's artwork to have deeply rooted cultural aspects with a traditional yet unique perspective. His expressive yet subtle passions are expressed through his portraits and appreciation of Hawaiian wood.
Growing up during the era of Hendrix, Iron Maiden, Bob Griese, Lichtenstein, Haring and Basquiat, Blair was able to form a timeless contemporary perspective. Over the years his zest to learn began to grow. Shifting from the canvas, he began to experiment in the media of wood. Though a self-taught Hawaiian wood working artist, Blair is the grandson of the late Millard Blair, a master woodturning craftsman whose passion for woodworking led him to own and operate the very first Hawaiian woodworking business in the Blair family line. Founded on Oahu in 1945, Blair LTD thrived for more than 40 years.
The rear of the bust features a natural bark exterior, while the carved front has a lovely polished patina. Cracks natural with age as pictured.
