Thonet Midcentury Bentwood Armchair c.1950s - Original Makers Mark

$400.00

As identified underneath the saddle, this piece was produced in the United States by Thonet Industries during the era between 1938-1962 when the growing manufacturer commenced United States fabrication under Thonet Industries and opened a showroom in New York City at 1 Park Avenue. This style is very similar to their early No. 3 “Writing Desk Armchair” designed by Michael Thonet, and perhaps even closer to the “ZPM for Thonet Bentwood Armchair” produced for Thonet by Polish “ZPM Radomsko,” a furnituremaker established at its conception by Thonet as an additional fabrication facility. ZPM Radomsko’s models can be distinguished by tapered rounded legs and the toprail features edges that slope inward as opposed to a more midcentury-modern “winged”-type edge detail. ZPM models are exemplary of the earlier Thonet-Mundus style, and also feature a framed, recessed seat a la the style of the bistro chair. During the era that this chair was fabricated in the United States, the Thonet 1957 Park Avenue Showroom catalogue identifies it under model number 1695-S7 (wood saddle seat). In addition, this catalogue offers a variant model, 1695-SU9, with padded seat. Although they were acquired as a set of four, each chair offers much potential as a solo piece, perhaps as a writing desk armchair as was initially thought of by Michael Thonet.

Machined and steambent solid beechwood comprises this Thonet bentwood chair, which has been painstakingly restored to match its original “stained beech 1 dark brown TP 89” coloring with satin finish as was characteristic of pieces from this era. There are a couple of small dents that are consistent with the age of this piece. Cracks, scratches, discoloration, textural issues, stain, and varnish are fully and genuinely refurbished to match. High quality Osmo stains and finishes are primarily featured.

We have 4 chairs available, 1 is currently restored fully as pictured. We can restore the other 1-3 as requested, please contact for details.
